It is appropriate that reader Oscar Wald`s July 3 letter was headed
”Geography” and not ”History.” Like many Americans, Wald displays a woeful ignorance of Israeli history when he asserts that Shamir and Begin`s armies attacked military targets.
Three of the pair`s more documented atrocities against civilians involved the bombing of the King David Hotel (for which Begin remains on Britain`s
”outlawed” list); the murder of Count Folke Bernadotte, the Swedish United Nations mediator; and the plunder and murder of the entire village of Deir Yasin, during which more than 100 men, women and children were killed and stuffed down wells.
The most recent ”terrorists” that the brave Israeli Defense Force fought were 66 babies who, as the Tribune reported, required treatment for tear gas inhalation after the IDF tossed bombs into a United Nations clinic.
