One of Mark Langston`s paychecks is about the size of Greg Hibbard`s salary. But that didn`t matter to Hibbard, who beat the highly paid Angel flop on Friday night.
Hibbard makes slightly more than the major league minimum $100,000, while Langston signed last winter for $16 million over five years. ”He just happens to make more doing his job than I make doing mine,” Hibbard said.
Think about this, then. Langston is 8-16 with a 4.58 earned-run average, while Hibbard is 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA.
– Ken Patterson needed 18 pitches to retire Brian Downing in the ninth inning Saturday. Downing fouled off 13 pitches, including 10 in a row at one point.
– The Sox will face two of the top four ERA leaders in the next two games. On Sunday they`ll oppose Chuck Finley, second in the league with a 2.53 ERA, and on Monday night in Comiskey Park they`ll draw Kansas City`s Kevin Appier, third with a 2.81 ERA.
