Joe Girardi was back behind the plate Sunday after he watched Damon Berryhill catch Saturday. Berryhill, in his first big-league appearance in a year, was hitless in three at-bats and didn`t have to make a throw.

”Somebody will test him,” manager Don Zimmer said. ”We`ll get a better idea when they run a couple of times on him.”

Meanwhile, Zimmer said, Girardi will continue to do the bulk of the catching.

No sure thing: There`s been speculation for awhile now that if Berryhill shows he`s healthy, the Cubs will trade one of the two catchers. Zimmer said Sunday it wasn`t necessarily so. ”Jimmy (Frey) and I have talked about it a few times-if Berryhill`s healthy, it wouldn`t be the worst thing in the world to have both of them on the club,” Zimmer said.

Leap of Grace: A photo by the Tribune`s Bob Langer of Mark Grace leaping high for a wild throw brought talk of Grace`s basketball talent at Tustin

(Calif.) High. ”I averaged 17.4 points a game as a senior,” said Grace.

”I stink now.”

Proud Doc: Team Dr. Michael Schafer said he was frustrated he wasn`t able to watch his prize patient, Rick Sutcliffe, in his comeback start Wednesday. He had everything set so he could be home for the telecast-only to discover there was no telecast that night. He settled for radio.

”I felt like a kid, when I was growing up, listening to the Cardinals, listening to the McDaniel brothers (Lindy and Von) pitch,” Schafer said Sunday. ”Unbelievable. The one game I want to see on TV.”

He said he liked what he heard.

Coming up: The last three callups-probably Derrick May, Greg Smith and Dave Pavlas-will join the club Wednesday in Philadelphia.
