The widely worshiped guru of the design world, Massimo Vignelli, held court recently at Luminaire, 361 W. Chestnut St., to pay homage to the master of refined aesthetics.
The smart-looking design crowd that usually haunts such events was there in force. They milled, munched hors d`oeuvres and snatched up copies of a $50 book titled, ”design: Vignelli.” Eagerly, they offered up their copies for a highly prized autograph. The volume is a review of 30 years of design by Vignelli Associates, the New York-based firm started by Vignelli and wife Lella.
If you`ve ever savored luscious Perugina chocolates, trudged home with a shopping bag from Saks Fifth Avenue or flown American Airlines, you`ve encountered the Vignellis` work. The next frontier is a line of clothing.
Is this tome the ultimate statement of his work? Pronounced the exalted one: ”Only until I do my next one.”
