Pauline Bart, a University of Illinois psychiatry professor and author of ”Stopping Rape: Successful Survival Strategies” (Pergamon Press, $35) is the keynote speaker at a day-long conference on sexual assault Sunday.
”New Directions: A Conference Confronting Issues of Sexual Assault” is organized by the Self-Empowerment Group, which for the last three years has offered self-defense courses to women in the Chicago area.
The conference will include demonstrations of defenses against armed assailants, films, a men`s conference group and speakers on topics including minority women and sexual assault, rape and the legal system and sexual harassment. The $15 conference fee includes lunch.
Bart has done extensive research on sexual assault, pornography and acquaintance rape. She also has written on women`s issues in general.
The conference begins at 10 a.m. Sunday and runs until 5:30 p.m. at Mundelein College, 6363 N. Sheridan Rd.; 1-312-338-4545.
