In the Sept. 13 article about Agatha Christie, Gillian Gill implies that Christie suffered from a lack of admirable female role models. Gill asks, rhetorically, ”Who, except perhaps Dame Edith Sitwell, has successfully created a powerful and popular image of the Grand Old Woman of Letters?”

To answer her question, I name the following: Marquerite Yourcenar, Katherine Anne Porter, Willa Cather, Isak Dinesen, Dorothy L. Sayers and Madame de Stael.

Clearly lack of precursors cannot be used as an excuse.
