Everybody knows that sending flowers can be a romantic gesture. But what about those times you prefer to convey a playfully hip, blast-from-the-past, ”retro cool” image? As the folks at Retro Kool see it, that calls for a big basket crammed full of old-fashioned, teeth-rotting penny candy and some vintage pop sounds.
The Hoboken, N.J., company, founded a few years ago by a couple of Baby Boomers, offers fun-filled cornucopias of jaw breakers, candy cigarettes, Red Hots, Nik-L-Nip, etc., plus an oldies-but-goodies `60s music CD or cassette at prices starting at $39 plus delivery charges.
Until recently, the company catered almost exclusively to trendy entertainment types. Execs at MTV, for example, ordered Retro Kool baskets delivered to Madonna and Paula Abdul; other recipients include Gloria Estefan and Michael Bolton.
This holiday season, though, Retro Kool is aiming for the mass market, with a variety of baskets. Among them are a new ”Super Hero” basket ($55)
with super hero toy, mug and comic book plus the usual sugar overload; a
”Mondo” basket ($75) with full-length Beatles picture CD and sweets; and the ”Way-Too-Kool” basket ($150) with Beatles picture CD, a hard-cover album graphics book and 100 or so candies.
