NBC signed up a new affiliate Monday: the Nippon Television Network of Japan.
NBC News President Michael Gartner announced that the new joint venture will add NTN, as the network`s first foreign affiliate, to the new NBC News Channel, a 24-hour affiliate service, in return for exclusive use in the United States of Nippon Television reports.
Nippon also will get exclusive use in Japan of NBC/Wall Street Journal Polls, conducted through the year on public, political and social issues.
Gartner said the joint venture will not affect his network`s arrangement with Visnews, which has worldwide distribution rights for the ”Nightly News With Tom Brokaw.”
The move comes at a time when all three networks have been under pressure to scale back both on domestic and foreign news bureaus.
