Twenty-one Du Page County taxing districts made last-minute reductions in their anticipated levies by Friday`s abatement deadline to soften the blow of 1990 tax bills that, nevertheless, will show estimated increases of 5 to 11 percent.

From April 5, when the county`s tentative 1990 tax extensions were announced, to Friday`s deadline, the 21 taxing districts reduced their anticipated levies by about $14.4 million.

Overall, 63 of the county`s 278 taxing districts have abated $58.6 million in this year`s levies.

Du Page County government`s abatement of $8.5 million and the forest preserve district`s abatement of $500,000, both approved last week, should provide some relief for every county taxpayer. Those with a home valued at $150,000, for example, should end up paying about $35 less in taxes this year than they would have been billed.

The amount of other reductions in tax bills will depend on where homeowners live.

The county`s levy had been expected to increase by $12.8 million, or 21 percent, over last year while the forest preserve district`s levy was anticipated to go up $529,000, or about 2 percent.

In effect, the county cut its tax increase over last year by more than half, and the forest preserve district eliminated nearly all of its anticipated levy increase over 1989.

School districts, which now account for about 66 percent of all real estate taxes levied in Du Page, continued to trail other types of government units in approving abatements.

Last year, in apparent response to tax sensitivity, a record 67 districts made more than $48.8 million in tax abatements.

Du Page County Clerk Gary King said he believed that more taxing districts would have abated this year had it not been for the uncertainty over what, if any, tax collection limitations will be adopted by the legislature.

Following is list of Du Page taxing districts that abated this year and the amounts. Those with an asterisk indicate an abatement or abatements made after April 5.
