Gary J. Maher, president of Illinois Cable Television Assn., claims

(”Cable responds,” May 27) a substantial increase in the number of cable TV subscribers since deregulation of the industry in 1984.

What he doesn`t mention is this increase is probably caused by the 1985 amendment to Illinois statutes requiring that if one person in a residential building wants cable TV, everyone in the building must also subscribe and pay for it.

We who do not want cable TV cannot refuse to subscribe.
