The latest trend making waves on the fitness front is Flo Motion, a routine that can deliver enhanced strength, flexibility and toning with a soothing aquatic edge.

It`s accomplished by using a polyurethane sleeve filled with water-the Flo-which is swung in a dancelike, rhythmic routine.

”The most common comment we get is that this is an American version of tai chi, which is a Chinese meditative slow-motion exercise,” says Francis Barclay, a partner in Flo Inc., which markets the product, created by a martial arts instructor.

By gripping handles at each end, the bag is slung in front and in back of the body, over the head and in stepping motions. The shifting water flow helps guide the user in movements, making the routine a continuous, fluid-movement workout, Barclay says.

The routines can boost flexibility, improve strength and provide a low-impact aerobic experience. The sound of the shifting water adds a touch of tranquility.

”The workouts of the `90s will have to be mentally engaging as well as physically engaging,” says Patricia Youssouf, owner of Youssouf Fitness Center in New York, and a former professional dancer and massage therapist. She recently sent eight of her instructors to advanced Flo Motion training classes in anticipation, she says,

of a surge of Baby Boomer exercise buffs.

”What`s hot in the fitness industry is taking care of aging Baby Boomers. One of the first things that`s goes (with age) is mobility. So they`re looking for a workout that going to increase their range of motion, especially in the spine, hips, knees and shoulders.”

Youssouf begins Flo Motion classes without music. ”It`s important for participants to hear their own breathing and the sound of the water to link their breathing to their movement. It helps them achieve the `Flo state,`

where the mind is absorbed in the physical activity. It`s mentally and emotionally exhilarating.”

Margaret Tucker, owner of New York`s Body Strength Center for Fitness and Movement, praises the mental component of the exercise.

The action of the water ”becomes a metaphor for the Flo-er`s emotional state,” says Tucker. ”If you`re emotionally out of control, the water will be racing ahead of you, whipping you around, and you quickly lose control (of the Flo sleeve). If you`re too passive, the water doesn`t move, the bag just hangs there.”

Flo Motion classes are available on both coasts; Chicago classes are slated to begin in the fall at as-yet undisclosed fitness studios, Barclay says.

In the meantime, a Flo Motion home kit-including a bag, booklet and a 30- minute instructional video-is available for $39.95 plus tax, shipping and handling. Call: 800-472-7777.
