President Bush has issued a directive asking that the use of seat belts be raised to 70 percent nationally by 1992. There are now about 48 percent of Illinois residents obeying the laws.
Lake County is planning on instituting more strict enforcement of the state`s mandatory seat belt law. Representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation and Kemper National Insurance Companies are meeting with police to discuss ways of educating the public to encourage the use of seat belts.
The police are urged to issue more tickets to drivers not obeying the law.
It`s a shame that people have to be threatened with a ticket and fine in order to protect their own lives and those of their families.
