Jerome Holtzman`s recent column, ”Foul relationship between umps, players,” made an eloquent attempt to whitewash the umpires. What he forgot to mention is the cameras showed clearly that the discussed hit was a fair ball.

Instant replay would have stopped the complete rhubarb, the umpire-player relationship, and pending lawsuits. Baseball has the means to dispense better decisions with the aid of ”instant replay.” Holtzman continues to be anti-instant replay, which is really anti-justice.

Umpires are capable of errors, as well as players and sportswriters. Why not help them when it`s possible? Cover-up umpires` mistakes? Holtzman said in his column, ”the only thing that`s important is to get the call right.” The umpires did not get it right, the cameras did.
