With Andy Kaufmann leaving school for a year after being declared academically ineligible and Larry Smith having graduated, the Illini lost their top three-point threats.

With the offense expected to feature 6-foot-9-inch sophomore center Deon Thomas, the Illini figure to get the ball inside more often than last year. But they`ll still need an outside threat to limit double-teaming of Thomas, and the former Simeon star expects 6-8 forwards Tom Michael and Scott Pierce to help fill that role.

”Tom and Scott are good outside shooters,” said Thomas. ”So we`ll still be able to pack a 1-2 punch.”

Michael was 18 of 44 (.409) from three-point range last year, while Pierce missed his sole attempt.
