Lincoln-Way coach Don Ekens had waited a long time for Monday night. And the wait had very little to do with his team`s game being pushed back two days by postponement.
Four times in recent years, Ekens had guided his team to a soccer sectional title game, only to be turned away.
Monday, all that frustration came to a screeching halt as Ekens` second-ranked Knights (19-1-3) eased past Homewood-Flossmoor 4-1. Ed Walenga scored twice and Greg McDonald and Jim Stewart also tallied to clear the way for Lincoln-Way to host Brother Rice Tuesday in the supersectionals.
”I thought we came out with a lot of intensity,” said Ekens. ”The two quick goals we scored in the first period (Stewart and Walenga) really semed to take some steam out of them.”
Homewood Flossmoor (14-7-4) scored its lone goal with 8:32 remaining on a shot by Roland Chuqquima. Lincoln-Way goalie Matt Greenwalt was seeking his 14th shutout of the season.
