It was interesting to note President Bush`s rationale for not granting recognition to Slovenia and Croatia: It could cause further escalation of Serbian aggression! By this token, the United States should not have declared independence from England, since it resulted in a war.

Of course, Lord Carrington was worried that recognition would cause his peace conference in The Hague to break up, as if diplomats sitting around a table wringing their hands (while innocent people are being killed) was doing some good. Punish those who want freedom and reward the aggressors-this is in the true spirit of British history.

The United States should give recognition to the governments of Croatia and Slovenia immediately and pressure the Yugoslav army to stop the killing by any means possible. The human rights of minorities in Croatia should be guaranteed, but what about the human rights of Croatians killed by the army`s shelling of Osijek, Dubrovnik, Vukovar, etc.?
