Certainly Mike Royko`s assertions (Dec. 24) that General Motors brought its present situation upon itself are correct. But I think this disaster could have been avoided if the operations of the auto industry had been more carefully and seriously regulated by government agencies.

What would have been good for this country were agencies similar to the Federal Aviation Administration and Civil Aeronautics Board that regulate aircraft and airlines.

So-called ”lemon laws” were completely unenforceable because of the harmony between regulators at all government levels and the auto world.

It`s still not too late to get started.
