Regarding the Jan. 11 story, ”Iacocca: Japanese `are beating our brains in` ”: Lee Iacocca`s flailing hands and raised voice don`t make us more competitive with Japan. He reportedly scoffed when the Japanese said our cars weren`t made as well as theirs. That is precisely the executive attitude that has crippled our economy.

I recently rented several different cars, for the same rate, on a business trip. One was a Shadow made by Iacocca and the other a Mitsubishi. The Japanese car drove so much better it wasn`t even close.

American executives have failed to learn lessons from their competition and have lined their own pockets like sultans. Iacocca is the supreme symbol of the executive who has failed his company, his workers and his country.
