A troubled Northwest Side mental hospital lacks sufficient physicians and psychiatrists to properly treat patients, hospital staffers have charged in a memo to the state`s top mental-health official.

The memo, signed by ”the medical staff of the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center,” 4200 N. Oak Park Ave., was sent Tuesday to Leigh Steiner, acting director of the state Department of Mental Health, and other top officials of the agency and of Chicago-Read.

In the memo, the staffers ask Steiner to find more money to hire seven more psychiatrists along with six full-time physicians and a part-time one to provide adequate care at the 478-bed, state-run hospital.

Pat Alvarez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Mental Health, said Wednesday that Steiner had not yet seen the memo.
