Mike Karg spaced four hits and Tom Panzica and Mike Sak drove in two runs apiece as Leyden beat Loyola 5-3 Thursday in the Niles North tournament.

Tom Knickerbocker (two hits, three RBIs) and Mike Pellegrini (three hits, one RBI) led Fremd`s 7-5 win over Niles North in a game called after six innings because of darkness.

Hoffman Estates blanked Evanston 5-0 behind Dan Hemminger (three-hitter, 10 strikeouts) and Jim Potter (two hits, two RBIs).

Proviso West 9, Riverside-Brookfield 0-Alvie Shepherd allowed just one hit and struck out eight in four innings, and Tom Rogers (two RBIs) and Kevin Becker had two hits apiece for Proviso West (1-1).

Hinsdale Central 7, Wheaton Central 6-Mike Woldman (two hits, two RBIs), Dan Erickson (two-run single), Jeff Frost (solo homer) and Clay Leonard (two hits) led Hinsdale Central (1-2). Joe Ableidinger (no hits, two strikeouts)

won in relief.

Westmont 8-12, St. Francis 4-0-Mark Baetzel (5 for 7, four RBIs for the day) and Matt Paulin (3 for 4, homer, two doubles, three RBIs, two walks, five runs) powered Westmont (3-0). Brian Moushon hurled a five-inning one-hitter and fanned six in Game 2.

Fenton 9-12, Lake Park 3-9-Shawn Miller was 3 for 4 with a two-run homer in Game 1, and Karl Greinig drove in three runs with two hits in Game 2 as Fenton (2-1) swept.

Downers Grove South 3-3, Benet 2-7-Downers South (2-2) took the opener on John Stapleton`s bases-loaded single in the eighth.

Glenbard West 6, Rolling Meadows 2-Winning pitcher Brice DeMayo was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Darren Dunlap had two hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases for Glenbard West (1-0).

Schaumburg 5-20, Antioch 1-0-Craig Resch settled for a two-hitter after holding Antioch without a hit and striking out 14 for 6 2/3 innings in the opener of Schaumburg`s season-opening sweep. Chuck Abbott had four hits and three RBIs for the day.

Lyons 9, Argo 1-Terry Olson pitched a two-hitter and had two hits along with Adam Ippolito (three RBIs), Matt Iverson and Jay Nichols (two doubles)

for Lyons (3-0).

Nazareth 5, St. Joseph 3-Winning pitcher Ray Castro (two hits, three RBIs) drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth to lift Nazareth (2-2).

Mather 8, Schurz 5-Jake Serrato (three RBIs) and Carlos Morales (two RBIs) both were 3 for 3 for Mather`s defending Public League champions (1-2). St. Laurence 3, Curie 2-Chris Koloffon delivered an eighth-inning RBI double for the Vikings (2-0).

Harlan 6, De La Salle 4-Telly Mott was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Harlan

(1-0).

Illiana Christian 4, Leo 1-Ben Mayer fired a two-hitter and John Zayabouth had two hits, scored three runs and stole three bases for Illiana

(1-0).

Gordon Tech 12, Taft 0-Brian Jarvis fired a five-inning no-hitter and Mike Ryan had two RBIs for Gordon (1-0).

Seneca 4, Somonauk 2-Chad Eggar (two doubles, RBI) and Aaron Swanson each had two hits for Seneca (1-0).

Brother Rice 4, Proviso East 0-Nick Milcarek hurled a six-inning no-hitter (the game was called because of darkness) for Rice (2-2). He struck out five and walked just two. Brandon Dumas, Brian Badke and Jason Fennell had RBI hits.

Aurora Central 9, East Aurora 4-George Monaco was 3 for 3 with two steals, two runs and three RBIs, and Leo Wrede was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI for the winners.

Huntley 7, Kirkland 3-Winning pitcher Lane Linnenkahl had two hits, including his second homer in two days, and two RBIs for Huntley (2-0).

Sycamore 10, Jacobs 4-Todd Thorstenson (two hits) and Craig Gustafson

(two-run triple) paced Sycamore (1-3).
