Ross Snyder, 89, a professor of Christian education, taught for 38 years at Chicago Theological Seminary, then for five years at San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Mr. Snyder of San Rafael, Calif., died March 27 in his home.
”He was known as a creative thinker, teacher and author,” said his son Ross Jr.
Citing his ability to integrate religious heritage with educational theory, his son added, ”He had a unique capacity for putting concepts in usable forms.”
Mr. Snyder, born on a farm near DeGraf, Ohio, attended Ohio State University, Boston School of Religious Education and Columbia Teachers College before entering the Presbyterian ministry.
He was director of religious education at Prospect Presbyterian Church in Maplewood, N.J., before joining the Chicago Theological Seminary staff.
Mr. Snyder was the first president of the Association of Professors in the Practical Fields.
He was the author of ”On Becoming Human,” ”Young People and Their Culture,” ”Contemporary Celebration” and ”The Ministry of Meaning.” He also wrote several books, including ”The Young Child as Person,” with his wife, Martha.
Other survivors include his wife, Martha; a son, Mark; two sisters; a brother; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. May 11 in Taylor Chapel at the Chicago Theological Seminary, 5757 S. University Ave.
