Tycoon`s fall: Alan Bond, the flamboyant businessman best known for financing Australia`s stunning triumph in the 1983 America`s Cup yacht race, was declared officially bankrupt Tuesday. A banking syndicate headed by HongkongBank of Australia applied for a trustee to be appointed after Bond failed to repay $194 million arising from a personal guarantee he gave on a loan to a former nickel-mining project. Meanwhile, Bond will stand trial beginning May 25, charged with a breach of securities law. Bond, 53, told the Perth District Court in a brief appearance that he would plead innocent to the charge, which arose from a special investigation into the 1988 collapse of Western Australian finance company Rothwells Ltd.
