Tap closed: Ontario, Canada`s largest province, slammed the door on U.S. beer imports, turning up the heat in a fermenting trade dispute. The Ontario government`s decision to halt imports of American beer was based on uncertainty about the price of U.S. beer sold in Canada, said Chris Layton, a spokesman for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. ”If (trade) talks don`t conclude successfully, the U.S. may put tariffs on Canadian beer,” Layton said. ”The Canadian government has indicated they could respond in a like manner.” Washington has threatened to set a tariff on Canadian beer unless Ottawa opens the Canadian market to U.S. beermakers by this summer.
