Lansing trustees have established a scholarship fund in honor of Kenneth Novak, 27, an unpaid part-time police officer who was shot to death two weeks ago during what he thought was a routine check of a disabled vehicle.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Thornton Fractional South High School student who wants to pursue a career in law enforcement. The amount of the scholarship has not been determined.

Trustee James McCollum said the award will be funded by the village and through private donations.
