With the shift in efforts of the war on cancer to prevention, rather than cure (Tribune, March 30), information regarding the relationship between reduced risks of breast cancer and breastfeeding should be included in efforts of prevention. American women are not given this information consistently, along with other information regarding the relationship between breastfeeding and the reduced risk of some childhood cancers.

The Surgeons General have mandated health professionals to increase the percentages of breastfeeding in the United States. In spite of this directive, the percentages are lowering. Why is it so many women are surprised to learn of the many benefits of breastfeeding? Why are they not getting this information, and why are they not being taught the simple techniques of management of basic breastfeeding?

By encouraging breastfeeding, the American Cancer Society would recognize its cancer prevention possibilities, cooperate with the Surgeon General`s directive and empower women to dramatically affect their baby`s health while satisfying the deep emotional urgings to care for their young through breastfeeding.
