Cheryl Lavin`s Tempo article of April 9 (”Stars` ribbons a symbol of hypocrisy”) singles out Hollywood personae for a jibe against insincere support of a cause. Why? Isn`t it something we all do? Most people will wear a red flower on ”Poppy Day” and a brown cardboard circle on ”Donut Day.”

Is it enough? No, but I wouldn`t trivialize whatever one does-Hollywood actor or man on the street. You would be challenged to find many who, on a regular basis, practice the charity expressed in Lavin`s column (e.g. volunteerism, monetary donations).

I, too, find waring red ribbons, hanging yellow ribbons and sporting buttons too small a contribution to our world`s problems. But a show of solidarity with those who are suffering is sometimes enough of a statement to cause another to question his conscience, to inspire an action.

Ms. Lavin says: ”They could have done so many things. But they didn`t.” An epitaph for our society as a whole?
