Custom framing is used not only for paintings and art on paper but also for treasured objects.
Moldings 2 to 3 inches deep, or even deeper, often are used for framing such objects as a watch, medallion or perhaps a dagger .
This style of deep frame, sometimes called a shadowbox, traditionally has a plush backing covered in fabric. The fabrics for the backings range from black velvet to taffeta to satin and chintz.
Taffeta catches the light well and forms a handsome backdrop for an object; velvet would absorb most of the light for a more solid backing.
