Marty Schottenheimer, who has taken the Kansas City Chiefs to the NFL playoffs in two of his three years as coach, has been given a five-year contract extension.
Schottenheimer, 48, is signed through the 1997 season. He was entering the final season of the contract he signed in 1989. Financial terms weren`t disclosed.
”Marty made it pretty straight that he didn`t want to be involved in a contract negotiation once training camp started,” said Carl Peterson, Chiefs president and general manager.
Schottenheimer is 29-18-1 in the regular season with Kansas City, which got into the second round of the playoffs last season before losing to Buffalo. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt said it was important to reach agreement with Schottenheimer before the season started.
”Continuity is very important,” Hunt said. ”Marty is an outstanding coach, and he is still young. Things are going well, and we made the playoffs the last two years, but just because you sign an extension doesn`t mean you always make the playoffs.”
Schottenheimer is 73-45-1 in seven seasons as an NFL coach.
