Universal Pictures has bought the rights to author-columnist Jimmy Breslin`s biography ”Damon Runyon,” which was published last September.

Hearst`s first ”star” reporter, Runyon is best known for his stories about colorful, small-time New York hoods and their ”dames” during the Roaring `20s and Prohibition. As a flamboyant, street-smart journalist during this era, Runyon covered the Broadway neighborhood and its denizens.

A Pulitzer Prize winner, Breslin is also an outspoken, charismatic journalist who has covered New York for close to 40 years. He has also written several novels and a musical and has acted in film. He also had a short-lived late-night show on ABC-TV.
