Cubs fans should not be outraged by Commissioner Fay Vincent`s ordering of the realignment of the National League divisions over the Cubs` objections. Since the adoption of night baseball at Wrigley Field, the old excuse that the Cubs` failures could be linked to the fatiguing effects of day baseball have largely evaporated.

Now, just think, Cubs fans! You`ve got a new built-in excuse for the rest of the 1990s.

I can hear the Cubs managers ready to tell the world that ”all these long road trips to the West Coast sap the strength of our team as the season wears on.”

So, don`t be sad, Cubs fans. The rivalry with St. Louis remains intact and now the Cubs will have a new excuse for their failures to win a pennant that should last well into the next millennium.
