Two brothers were killed in an automobile accident in Roselle late Friday when a speeding driver being chased by police crashed into their car, authorities said Saturday.
Fernando Chapa, 27, of 280 Windsor Drive, Roselle, and Luis Chapa, 26, of 8032 W. Keeler St., Chicago, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Roselle Police Chief Richard Eddington.
The driver of the other automobile, Mark Williams, 28, of 154 Chatham Ct., Bloomingdale, was in fair condition at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, a hospital official said.
Shortly after the accident, police tested Williams` blood-alcohol level and found it exceeded the state`s limit of 0.10 percent, according to Eddington. Officials would not disclose the exact figure.
Williams was charged with two counts of reckless homicide, according to Eddington. Authorities said they were considering additional charges against Williams. Eddington said police later discovered that the car Williams was driving had been stolen and that he had a suspended driver`s license.
”It`s a tragedy for the Chapa family,” Eddington said. Williams ”was going so fast that there was no way he could control the car at that speed.” The chain of events that led to the accident began shortly after 11 p.m. Friday on Roselle Road, Eddington said, when a police officer clocked Williams driving a sports car at 68 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone.
Williams had just left The Last Call, a tavern at 300 N. Roselle Rd., according to Eddington.
The officer attempted to pull Williams` car over on Central Avenue just south of Irving Park Road, he said. Williams slowed as if he were going to stop, then sped up and turned left on Central Avenue, a largely residential street, Eddington said.
The officer chased Williams, who authorities said was traveling faster than 100 m.p.h. at one point.
The Chapa brothers were driving on Central Avenue ahead of Williams, about to turn left onto Rosewood Drive. Williams tried to swerve around the Chapas` car but plowed into it as they were turning, Eddington said.
The brothers were returning home after renting a cassette from a video store, according to police.
The crash took place about three minutes after the officer initially saw Williams, Eddington said.
