Police were searching for two men suspected in least a half-dozen burglaries in Cook and Du Page Counties who escaped Monday after their car collided with a police car during a chase.
Although the men avoided capture, a 26-year-old Chicago woman in the car was apprehended and stolen computer and office equipment was found in the car, said Cmdr. Bob Scianna of the Oak Park police. The merchandise was part of $10,000 worth of equipment stolen Sunday afternoon from two offices in an Oak Park building at 101 N. Marion St., he said.
The woman was released Monday night after the Cook County State`s Attorney`s Office decided not to press charges, said Oak Park detective Len Jorgensen. He said he expected felony burglary warrants will be issued Tuesday for two Chicago men, whom police have identified.
Police believe the men are responsible for office break-ins in Oak Brook, Oak Park, Elmhurst and possibly Chicago, Jorgensen said.
The chase began shortly after 4:30 a.m. after an Elmhurst police officer noticed the occupants of a Lincoln Town Car were acting suspiciously near the intersection of Lake Street and York Road, Scianna said.
When the officer tried to pull the car over, a chase ensued on the Eisenhower Expressway, with speeds reaching 90 m.p.h., Scianna said. Elmhurst, Chicago and Illinois State Police were involved in the chase.
The suspects exited the Eisenhower at Austin Avenue, headed north to Iowa Street and collided with a Chicago police car at Iowa and Laramie Avenue, Scianna said. Two officers in the police car suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital and released, Scianna said.
