The article by Terrence L. Barnich, on decommissioning Russian nuclear power plants (July 25) is all very logical. But it perpetuates the

misconception that has cursed us now for nearly 50 years: that nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants are the same thing. How do you expect the people to trust nuclear power when it is identified with mass destruction from nuclear bombs?

Nuclear arms are the most horrible, diabolic things ever invented. Nuclear power plants could be the salvation of the human race, the only real answer to global warming. No one was ever hurt by a nuclear power plant accident in the U.S. (not even at Three-Mile-Island). France has been producing 70 percent of its electric power by nuclear energy without mishap.

Nuclear waste? Why can we not put it where the military, still today, explodes its yearly quota of ”only” six bombs? And why is the overwhelming part of the Department of Energy budget devoted to weapons production? This world is crazy.
