An international field of more than 60 cyclists take off at 3 p.m. Sunday in the $25,000 NutraSweet U.S. Pro Criterium in Downers Grove. Teams will complete 62 laps of the one-mile course through downtown Downers Grove and competitors include 1991 champ Greg Oravetz of San Bernadino, Calif., Oak Park native Paul Willerton, Wheaton`s Bob Mathis, and Spanish racers Rodrigo Alcala and Alexander Furst. More than 30,000 spectators watched last year`s race.
The criterium entrants include one all-Illinois women`s racing team, the
”Enjoy Soy Cyclers” (sponsored by the Land of Lincoln Soybean Association), and they include Gurnee`s Karen Wick, Chicago`s Marilyn Schreiner, and Warrenville`s Kim Virden.
– A 5K run and walk benefitting Open Hand Chicago, an organization providing in-home meal service to AIDS patients, commences Friday, Aug. 28 at 6:45 p.m. on a TAC-certified course in Lincoln Park at 3600 N. Lake Shore Dr. Call (312) 348-5207 for more information.
– The Mt. Prospect Park District is hosting weekly beach volleyball tournaments until the end of September at its sand volleyball area athe Rec Plex, 420 W. Dempster, Mt. Prospect.
