Carol Stream police sought to determine Thursday what caused a car to slide onto the wrong side of the road and slam into a van in a collision that killed two of the three people in the car.

Michael Bieda, 11, of 402 Chelsea Cove, Roselle, and the driver, John Rocha, 21 who was staying with the Bieda family, were pronounced dead Wednesday night at Central Du Page Hospital, Winfield, shortly after the accident, the Du Page County coroner`s office said.

Bieda`s sister, April, 16, who also was riding in the car, remained in serious condition at Central Du Page, a spokesman said Thursday afternoon.

According to accounts from the coroner`s office and Sgt. Richard Willing of the Carol Stream Police Department, Rocha was driving east along Army Trail Road as Michael Bieda rode in the front seat, and his sister in the rear seat. Near the intersection of Merbach Road, Willing said, their car slid into the westbound lane and collided with a van driven by Leonard Sosnowski, 43, of Carol Stream. Three of his children, Debbie, 3; Matthew, 11; and Joseph, 15;

were in the van.

A westbound car driven by Sandra Smith, 20, of St. Charles, struck the van from behind moments after the first collision.

The Sosnowskis were treated at Glen Oaks Medical Center, Glendale Heights. Smith declined treatment, Willing said.
