In 1990, corporations announced permanent job cuts at the rate of 1,278 a day as of July. The rate grew to 1,636 a day for the same timeframe in 1991. And so far this year, the rate is at 1,992. However, the tally is incomplete. It takes in only publicly announced job cutbacks.
