Your recent article on the defense budget explains why so many Americans are so cynical about our government. No one in Congress attempts to justify the $274 billion defense budget in military terms-it`s all politics and jobs. People in the defense industry aren`t the only ones hurting for jobs. But instead of throwing away billions on weapons we just don`t need, wouldn`t it make more sense to spend our tax money on things that will create a better standard of living while creating jobs? In Chicago we could use some help with our crumbling infrastructure. A public works program financed by cuts in the military budget would create jobs, improve our city, attract more business, etc. It seems like common sense.
