– Pontiac Tournament-Hales Franciscan (5-4) upended No. 9 Joliet West 69-64 behind Greg Wood (22 points), Keith Stanton (15) and Shawn Baker (12). Joliet West (6-2) led 63-49 with 6:30 to play but didn`t score again until six seconds remained in the game.

”Needless to say, I was not real pleased,” Joliet West coach Mike O`Connell said. ”We got out of our offense and had a couple of kids start to free-lance.”

Stanton`s jumper with 39 seconds left capped a 6-0 run and sealed it for Hales. Demetris Anderson led Joliet with 20 points. Gary Bell scored 17 and Corey Shelby added 12.

Lockport (8-2) trailed by 19 in the first half but used an 18-2 run over the final 6:25 to post its 69-54 victory over Pontiac. James Foster scored 22 points and Jeff Schultz and Albert Barnett added 14 apiece.

No. 11 Oak Park (7-1) breezed past Batavia 83-47 as Mike Amrhein (24 points), Jamal Edwards (17) and John LeFevour (11) had the hot hand. Adam Lund and Peter Jrejsa scored 10 points apiece for Batavia (4-4).

Bloom Trail (6-2) survived two overtimes to beat Waukegan 66-63 behind Gordon Sharkey`s 26 points and 13 from Cortez Stewart. Waukegan (7-3) scored first in the second overtime then missed its next seven shots. Shannon King`s 16 points led five players in double figures.

Bloomington stayed unbeaten after nine games with a 64-52 decision over West Aurora.

De La Salle (6-2) edged Warren 39-36 as Claude Cook netted 11.

– Rockford Tournament-In opening-round games, Buffalo Grove got 13 points and five rebounds from Jason Strojinc to beat Crystal Lake Central 47-30, Jeff Wood`s 14 points weren`t enough as Antioch lost to Rockford Auburn 60-40, and Cyrus Turner had 31 points in Hersey`s 74-72 come-from-behind victory over Machesney Park Harlem. Hersey trailed 61-42 before outscoring Harlem 32-11 in the last quarter behind nine points from Thomas Rodgers and eight from Turner. GIRLS BASKETBALL

– Crystal Lake Central Tournament-Ranessa Gaudio scored 20 points as Palatine beat Grant 47-35 and Chris Walle had 14 points as Fenton beat Larkin 56-38. In the other two opening-round games, Jenny Linjoco scored 18 points and Kristen Barker 15 as Rolling Meadows (4-7) edged Rockford Auburn 59-49 and Crystal Lake Central (10-1) smashed Addison Trail 76-32 behind Michelle Georgi (22 points) and Becky Hicklin (17).

– Dundee-Crown Tournament-Amy Meier scored 19 points and Kelly Tellschow added 13 as Fremd (5-9) advanced to the semifinals with its fifth straight victory, a 54-43 decision over No. 14 New Trier (8-3). Anne Nahrwold (23 points, 10 rebounds) scored all 15 of New Trier`s points in the second quarter, but Fremd still had a 31-21 lead at the half.

Fremd will meet No. 3 Mother McAuley, a 79-27 winner over Proviso West.

”We`ve been playing dirty,” McAuley coach Diane Darrah said. ”When we play a good opponent we play well. We play someone weaker, we lower our standards. We played much better today than Saturday. We got our act together.”

Jenny Costello had 13 points, Amy McCarthy 12 and Sue Gallagher 11 for McAuley (11-0).

York (10-6) advanced to the semifinals by handing Cary-Grove its first loss 82-52. Priscilla Trevino led York with 22 points and had help from Akisha Franklin (15 points) and Amy Cesario (12). Megan DePuy led Cary-Grove (11-1)

with 28 points and nine rebounds.

”I keep telling the kids that some of the games we lost early are going to pay off,” York coach Steve Cochran said. ”Every kid who stepped on the court tonight came ready to play.”

”As a team and individually, it was the poorest game we`ve played by far,” Cary-Grove coach Gary Wadlington said. ”The quickness of their guards really shocked us.”

No. 2 Maine West beat No. 13 Naperville Central`s press to take a 17-7 lead on the way to a 62-52 victory and a berth against York in the semifinals. Jamie Pekoe and Katie Fregetto each scored 16 points for Maine (12-1). Jenna Wrobel had 13 for Naperville (12-2).

– Hillcrest Tournament-Tahani Spearman scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to spark Shepard (7-2) to a 49-30 victory over Oak Forest.

Aimee Lonigro and Tonica Robinson had 14 points each as Richards (7-3)

outlasted Bremen 42-41 with Julie Bonk sinking a basket with 42 seconds left to give Richards a 42-41 lead. Bremen missed two free throws with 8 seconds remaining. Dana Bruce had 16 for Bremen. . . . Mary DeGroot tallied 19 points and Danielle Czyz 13 as No. 12 Lincoln-Way (11-0) routed Eisenhower 68-5. . . . Phillips (11-2) rolled over Homewood-Flossmoor 45-26 with Kenya Lyles bagging 17 points and Teri Franklin (10). . . . Hillcrest (7-3) routed Thornton 54-40 with Shae Hart scoring 12 points and Jan Rife and Jennifer Kade 11 apiece. Tamara Jamison had 14 for Thornton. . . . (9-3) Sandburg (9-3)

destroyed Rich Central 61-18 with Kate Szhilik`s 18 points showing the way. . . . Tiffany Burnside and Lennetta Bentley each scored 16 points along as Rich South (8-0) slipped past St. Francis de Sales 61-41. Gia Menconi had 19 for de Sales. . . . Stagg (6-2) nudged Tinley Park 36-29 with Krista Petersen netting 11 points.

– Milwaukee Pius XI Tournament-No. 1 Marshall (10-0) rolled over Watertown

(Wis.) 70-23 with little trouble as Kim Williams and Yolanda Miller each scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures. Alisa Burras and Radiance Clarke added 10 apiece. Watertown had nobody in double figures and had 33 turnovers.

”Our emphasis this year has been on defense,” Marshall coach Dorothy Gaters said. ”If we`re going to be successful, we have to play good defense without too many fouls. I felt we had too many fouls tonight. It`s unfortunate we have to play (Barrington) because we`re from the same state. I`m sure it`s going to be a good game.”

No. 7 Barrington (12-1) whipped Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar 74-55 with Erica (29 points, 18 rebounds) and Ashley Berggren (22 points) leading the assault. Pia McClendon and Martina Dillard managed 11 points apiece for Dunbar. Barrington squandered a 34-15 halftime lead and was plagued by 20 turnovers in the second half. Dunbar used a 24-8 run to pull to within 42-39 with 1:19 left in the third quarter before an 8-0 Barrington run gave the Fillies a 50-39 advantage. Erica Berggren had 17 points in the fourth quarter when Barrington outscored Dunbar 26-16.

”We didn`t play well at the start of the second half,” Barrington coach George Jeffs said. ”Their pressure got to us. You`re not really ready for it until you see it. Once we figured it out we were OK.

”We look forward to playing Marshall, but we know they`re very tough. I would be happy to go 2-1 in this tournament.”

– St. Viator ”Snowflake” Classic-No. 16 Stevenson (11-3) dropped Waukegan 57-36 with Tina Stops scoring 16 points and Tauja Catchings adding 14. . . . Regina edged Carmel 66-58 in OT with Julie Martin bagging 21 points and Kelly Nicholas 12.

No. 18 Argo (11-2) bopped St. Viator 52-37 with Julie Jarosz bagging 15 points and Chris Bochnak 14. Suzanne Midland led St. Viator with 15 points.
