One of the highlights of Chicago music in January has to be the annual Jazz Fair of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, which this year will begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the Blackstone Hotel, 636 S. Michigan Ave.
This will be the 15th annual event, and, as always, it will feature a stylistic range of Chicago jazz. The $12 admission covers all performances in the Blackstone Hotel, plus a 10 p.m. show at Buddy Guy’s Legends, 754 S. Wabash Ave. (admission to Buddy Guy’s show alone is $5).

– 6 p.m., Crystal Ballroom: Barrett Deems Big Band.
– 6:45 p.m., Embassy Room: Malachi Favors Maghostut Trio.
– 7 p.m., Jazz Showcase: Malachi Thompson FreeBop Band.
– 8:45 p.m., Crystal Ballroom: Victor Parra and the Mambo Express.
– 9:15 p.m., Hubbard Room: The New Memphis Nighthawks, a traditional-jazz band.
– 9:30 p.m., Jazz Showcase: Pianist Stu Katz, alto saxophonist Jimmy Ellis, trumpeter Orbert Davis, bassist Dan Shapera and drummer Robert Shy.
In addition, a 10 p.m. set at Buddy Guy’s Legends will showcase blues veteran Sunnyland Slim.
