Jobless claims up: First-time applications for state unemployment benefits climbed by 17,000 in the first week of January, the Labor Department said in a report that reflected a slight leveling off after recent gains in the job market. The department said 361,000 people filed for benefits in the week ended Jan. 9, up from a revised 344,000 the previous week. The total for the Jan. 2 week was initially put at 343,000. Several states said the start of a new period for calculating how much an unemployed person could receive in benefits encouraged more people to file initial claims in the period.
