Blue Autumn (Nat Adderley Quintet, Evidence).
The best Adderley music has always come in front of a crowd, and this 1983 recording of brother Nat is no exception. Done in a San Francisco club, the performance is by turns lively and lovely.
Particularly fine is the haunting Tex Allen tune, “The Fifth Labor of Hercules.” Sonny Fortune does the alto sax work, and he pays deference to Nat’s late brother, “Cannonball,” in a tune called “For Duke and Cannon.”
