To avoid an NC-17 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, Paramount Pictures’ psychosexual thriller “Sliver,” which stars Sharon Stone and William Baldwin, is undergoing reshoots and re-edits to tone down one of the sex scenes, sources have confirmed.
Only six weeks before the film’s national release, “Sliver” director Phillip Noyce is reshooting a love scene that was considered a little too steamy by the MPAA, which screened the film. In addition, sources say, the trailer is being re-edited to reduce the sexuality.
An NC-17 rating, which prohibits anyone under 17 from viewing the film, was created by the MPAA two years ago to replace the X rating. The NC-17 rating is a problem for distributors because newspapers have refused to run ads for films given that rating and some exhibitors and communities will not allow an NC-17 film to play in theaters.
“Some reshooting is happening because the film is too hot and steamy in its present state, and is being toned down a few notches,” a Paramount spokesman confirmed.
