Village Board members are expected to vote Aug. 3 on whether to take over the Carpentersville and Countryside Fire Protection District and turn it into a municipal department.
Trustees are directing the village attorney to draft a law disconnecting the village from the fire district. According to state law, a municipality can disconnect from a fire district if the municipality covers more than 50 percent of the district’s territory, officials said.
If the trustees vote to disconnect, the matter would go to the Circuit Court of Kane County, which would hold a hearing before deciding whether to allow a village takeover of the district.
If the takeover is successful, Carpentersville would assume all debts of the district and would provide fire protection to all areas now protected by the district, whether within the village or not.
