Bob Greene’s ban-the-gun pipedream of Aug. 23 observed that today we face a criminal menace characterized as “an army of soulless and homicidal morons, killing at will.” He challenged us to “think of an America without guns.”

But it doesn’t take a gun to rob, rape, kill or maim. It only takes a soulless and homicidal moron armed with a knife, a club or his own bare fists. On the other hand, it does take a gun to stop or prevent a violent attack and preserve innocent life. And nothing less than a gun will do.

Mr. Greene asked us to “just consider walking down a city street, knowing there are no guns.” No thanks, Bob. I’d much prefer to legalize “concealed carry” for law-abiding Illinois citizens, and let the criminal wonder which of his intended victims will shoot down his predatory aspirations.
