California firefighters launched an all-out assault Thursday to snuff out wildfires that killed one person, destroyed at least 300 homes and leveled movie stars’ mansions in the exclusive enclave of Malibu. While hot spots continued flaring up in the mountains, crews were winning the battle against a weakening firestorm that only a day before produced flames more awesome than any imagined by Hollywood filmmakers who live in the area. As calmer weather helped quell the blazes, investigators were examining clues suggesting that a serial arsonist may be responsible for several of the fires that have hit southern California since Oct. 26.
