Valery Kuleshov, the silver medalist of the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will appear at the Artists Showcase West concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Downers Grove.
At the competition, Kuleshov was also awarded the prize for Best Performance of a Commissioned Work, for “Ghost Waltzes” by American composer Morton Gould. His performance at the Van Cliburn competition will be featured in a documentary on Dec. 15 on PBS.
Sunday’s concert will include works by Scarlatti, Schumann, Chopin and Liszt.

– Classical guitarist Christopher Parkening will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the College of Du Page Arts Center Mainstage, 22nd Street and Park Boulevard, Glen Ellyn.
The repertoire will include “Leyenda,” by Isaac Albeniz; “Villanesca,” by Enriques Granados; Suite in “Modo Polonico,” by Alexandre Tansman; and “The Well-Tempered Clavier” by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Tickets are $23, $22 for students and senior citizens.
Also at the Arts Center’s Mainstage, the New Classic Singers will present “Grand International Opening,” a concert of choral works by Benjamin Britten, Henk Badings, Felix Mendelssohn and Philip Glass at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The program also will feature American spirituals and gospel songs.
Tickets are $10, $9 for senior citizens, $6 for students.
In the Arts Center’s Studio Theatre, a college production of “Independence,”-about a mother and three daughters and their struggle to find a balance between independence and family bonds-will run through Dec. 5.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, and noon Wednesday.

– Jazz vibist Lionel Hampton will take the stage at the Norris Theater in St. Charles at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Hampton has been involved in jazz for over half a century. He performed with Louis Armstrong in 1930 and with Benny Goodman in 1936. The list of sidemen who got their start performing with Hampton include Clark Terry, Fats Navarro, Quincy Jones and Charlie Mingus.

– The Hanover Band, a 38-member orchestra that plays 18th Century instruments, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Wheaton College. Guest soloist is tenor John Aler.
The orchestra, directed by Roy Goodman, will play Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 in D Major, and three works by Mozart.
Tickets range from $15 to $23, with discounts for students and senior citizens. The concert will take place at Edman Memorial Chapel, Washington and Franklin Streets, Wheaton.
Also at Wheaton College, cellist Dan Davies will present “An Evening of Baroque Masterworks” at a faculty recital at 8 p.m. Monday in Barrows Auditorium, 500 College Ave., Wheaton.
