Despite concerns about aesthetics, the Village Council has approved plans to construct a water tower instead of an underground storage tank.

Mayor Rosemary Kaptur said she would have preferred an underground tank but decided a water tower would be more efficient. The 500,000-gallon tower, which will be 160 to 180 feet high, will help keep water-pressure levels constant, decrease surges and ensure that water is available if there is a waterline break or a power outage, Kaptur said.

The tower will cost an estimated $500,000 to build.

The council also approved an agreement to buy an $85,000 parcel on the grounds of Hackney’s, a restaurant at 123rd Street and LaGrange Road, to house the water tower.
