Soccer practice and other Park District programs will soon come to Leslie Park under the terms of a lease agreement between the village and the district.

The Village Board last week approved leasing several acres of land just north of Illini Lake to the park district for 99 years at $1 per year. The lease should be in force by the end of November, said village administrator Dan Wennerholm.

The parcel, about four blocks east of Bloomingdale Road and two blocks south of Schick Road, is part of the land Bloomingdale bought through a special assessment in the 1970s for storm water control, Wennerholm said. The village operates a detention pond and pumping station at the site. The Park District owns a strip of adjoining land that contains a tot lot.

“We didn’t feel it would be appropriate to give away land the village had gained through a special assessment,” Wennerholm said in explaining why the village isn’t just donating the land to the park district.
