After seeing the previews for “The Three Musketeers,” I went to the theater expecting a movie filled with action and laughs. The movie did have its high points, but unfortunately, they were the same scenes I had seen in the previews.

The story of “The Three Musketeers” is a classic. Young but courageous D’Artagnan (Chris O’Donnell) goes to Paris in hopes of joining the prestigious royal guard, the Musketeers. He arrives just as Cardinal Richelieu (Tim Curry) is disbanding the group as part of his plan to assassinate the king and take over the throne. D’Artagnan meets up with three outlaw Musketeers (Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Oliver Platt), and they all set out to save the king.

This could have been a really great movie, and at times it was. It seemed like the producers couldn’t decide whether to make a funny, light-hearted movie or a deep, literary film, so they decided to try to combine the two. Also, the cast could have been better. Charlie Sheen mumbled every line, and Kiefer Sutherland seemed to be sleep-walking.

There’s plenty to like about “The Three Musketeers.” The costumes, on-location scenery and stunts were fantastic. Unfortunately, the acting made the witty script downright dull. When it comes to these Three Musketeers, I have to say the better version is behind the candy counter. 1/2(STAR)
