The City Council has unanimously approved a proposal banning the firing of cross bows, and bows and arrows.

Ald. Jim Murphy proposed the ban in response to public complaints about a resident who has been conducting target practice with a cross bow in his back yard. Murphy, who chairs the city’s Public Safety Committee, said residents on the northeast side raised the issue at a recent committee meeting.

The residents said the man sometimes lodged arrows in nearby garages, Murphy said. The families that complained about the resident have young children, he said.

“This is the only incident that we have heard of so far. When you have two families with young kids come in and raise a concern about that, you want to get on that right away,” he said.

The ban will be added to the city ordinance that regulates the use of other weapons, including firearms and pellet guns.

Violators are subject to fines of $500 per incident, Murphy said.
